Wan Tsai Chen

Artistic Director, Violin and Viola
Wan Tsai Chen

Wan Tsai was born in Taipei, Taiwan and has taught violin and viola with the Suzuki Method for almost twenty years. Before immigrating to Canada, Wan Tsai taught strings students in the Department of Music at Fu-Jen Catholic University, Taipei American School and HwaKang Arts High School. Wan Tsai came to the Suzuki Society in the 1996-1997 school year and became the Society's Artistic Director in 2001. Wan Tsai received her B.A. in Music Performance from Chinese Culture University and her M.A. in Curriculum and teaching from Michigan State University. Wan Tsai is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

J. Terrence McCarthy

Violin and Musicianship
J. Terrence McCarthy

Terry holds both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Music Education from the University of Calgary. He taught violin with the Society from 1973 to 1976. In 1975, Terry began a twenty-five year career as a teacher of strings, band, social studies and language arts with the Calgary Board of Education. Terry is a past president of the Alberta String Association. He is a founding member of the Orchestra Society of Calgary and has played violin in the Calgary Civic Symphony and the University of Calgary Orchestra. Terry is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Soon Young Sohn

Violin
Soon Young Sohn

Soon Young Sohn received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Se-jong University in South Korea, where she was a private music teacher for ten years. She received additional training at the Gottingen Music Conservatory in Germany, where she taught in a Korean-language music school. Soon Young joined the Suzuki Society's faculty in 2003 and is teaching both private and group lessons to violin students. Soon Young is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Kristin Flores

Violin

Kristin is currently enrolled inthe Ph.D. program for music composition at the University of Alberta. Kristin has a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and 19 years of experience in playing the violin.

Marge Patipatanakoon

Early Childhood Education
Marge Patipatanakoon

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Marge studied piano intensively and then pursued nursing. As a young woman, she headed to Laos in Southeast Asia, where she taught midwifery and maternal and child health. In 1993, Marge was instrumental in bringing an early childhood music program for children aged two months to three years to Calgary. She has since established baby and pre-school programs in Cochrane and at the Society. Marge believes that studying music can help young people in every aspect of their lives - from building character, to learning discipline and focus, to appreciating beauty. She is currently teaching at the Suzuki Society, the Alberta Family Life Centre and Inner City Servants Anonymous. Marge is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Dianne Adams

Early Childhood Education
Dianne Adams

As a Suzuki parent with a natural love for the Suzuki philosophy as applied to life, music and the love of children, Dianne was inspired and encouraged to become involved by taking courses offered in Suzuki Early Childhood Education. Dianne has taught Preschool French and Sensorial Life in the Montessori environment. She believes that combining Suzuki Early Childhood Talent Education and the Montessori teaching method brings out the best in children. Dianne was born in Trinidad and came to Canada in 1970. She had not played any musical instruments until five years ago when she began violin lessons. Dianne is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Barb Goosen

Early Childhood Education
Barb Goosen

Barb completed training for early childhood teachers with world renown Suzuki Early Childhood music trainer, Dorothy Jones, and started teaching in the fall 2004. She joined our STES faculty in January 2005 and is assisting in the preschool and baby classes. Barb has a BA from the University of Winnipeg with a major in Developmental Studies. She worked with children in daycare settings for many years. Singing is her first love and she currently sings with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus.

Sandra Lindsay

Accompanist
Sandra Lindsay

 

Sandra Lindsay has had extensive experience as a solo pianist and collaborative artist, completing her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance and Accompanying and Coaching at the University of Calgary and Westminster Choir College ( Princeton , New Jersey ) as well as attending summer courses in Paris , France ; Aspen , Colorado and Courtenay , BC . She has worked as a pianist in Toronto for the Canadian Opera Company, York University , the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir, and the Hart House Singers and in Calgary for Rocky Mountain College , the Suzuki Talent Education Society, Cantare Children’s Choir, and the Academy at Mount Royal College . Sandra is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Calgary.
